The project brief was to design a cafe on O’Connell Street in Dublin that would look organic and would not interfere with the street surroundings. The design was inspired by 120 metres high Spire that is the focal point of O’Connell Street. Since the location of the cafe was the green island, it was important to us to make the cafe complimentary to the spire. The design evolved into a rectangular shape that was visually divided into three sections. The middle section was made of glass, and the end sections were made of Kingspan panels to replicate the stone buildings in the area. The glass section helped to provide light and gave modern touch to the cafe. The sculptural shape of the roof was made of aluminium to replicate the material used in the Spire. The roof also provided shelter for the outdoor sitting area. The large windows facing the East and West provided adequate natural light all day and connected the cafe to the street life.
